A scar is, sometimes, a fond memory of our childhood. The scars on the head may or may not be visible but the worry is can hair grow on scars?
There can be scarring on the scalp after an accident, a fall, a tiny wound, or even a poorly made hair graft. Scars consist of fibrous tissue, blood vessels, and new skin due to damage or injury.
Who hasn’t experienced a scar after a fall? Our childhood was always full of adventures, games, laughs, but also scars. The worry comes when it involves the head.

Can hair grow on scars?
Unfortunately, no, hair cannot grow on scars. During the scarring process, several components of normal skin are altered, including pilosebaceous follicles.’ The resulting skin cannot grow hair on its own and is no longer similar to the normal one before the damage, being dry that flakes easily.
The scalp is different from the rest of the body’s tissues. It is made up of hair follicles that go through a growth cycle from time to time. This follicle is unique in its kind.
Can you get a bald hair spot from a scar?
Yes. Hair does not grow naturally in a scar on the scalp due to direct damage to the hair follicle, as it does not regenerate itself. The whole scarring process is based on repair, not the regeneration of the damaged parts.
How can I cover a scar on my head?
Fortunately, it is not complicated to cover up scars. Regardless of their size and where they are, different methods cover them on the head. It is a solvable problem.
Hair pigmentation is one of the most widely used techniques to cover marks since it is affordable and immediate. It allows the scar to be concealed without surgery by applying pigments that simulate the shape and color of the hair around it.
If, on the other hand, you wish to have natural hair, a hair transplant is your best option. It is a surgical procedure where hair follicles from other areas are grafted into the scar that eventually grows on their own.
There are two types of transplants to replace hair in a scar:
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
The first consists of extracting a small skin patch of 6- to 10- inches with hair separated one by one into tiny pieces called grafts. The second directly removes the skin follicle, leaving slight marks on the scalp or nearby skin.
How long does it take for the hair to grow on scars?
The time it takes for the hair to grow into the treated scar can vary greatly depending on the person. Some may see them at 4 months while others at 6 months or a year. The procedure is actually highly effective, with a satisfaction rate of 60% and above.
You can also find hair growth oils to aid the process.
Hair does not grow by itself in a scalp scar because the pilosebaceous follicle does not regrow itself. The damaged skin is only repaired.
There are methods to solve this concern. Hair transplantation is the most suitable if you look for a definitive solution or scalp micro-pigmentation if the mark is small and barely noticeable.
